Online classes have been really hard to catch up with however, I’m right back on track. I have completed that was due for all my classes so far. I’m trying to make up the blogs I missed. I’m planning on making quarantine memes for this class.

One of the major issues in the current year was abortion. Many states have different opinions on this matter. Even Federal and state have a different view on this matter. One example of different opinions was in the case of Roa vs wade. This case took place in Texas where abortion was denied. However, the supreme court ruled this law as unconstitutional and made abortion legal. Under the Reproductive health act, NewYork banned third-trimester abortions unless to save the life of a pregnant woman.

The lesson on Civil liberties and civil rights has given me a better understanding between them. Civil liberties are limitations on government while civil rights are the right of citizens to political and social freedom and equality. Some Example of civil liberties is freedom of expression, speech, assembly, religion, and freedom from torture. The civil liberties mostly come from the bill of rights. Miranda vs Arizona was one case where civil liberties were questioned.
Civil rights are where you cannot be discriminated based on age, race, sex, religion, sexual orientation, etc. The civil rights movement in the 1960s is one of the major examples where people fought against discrimination. This was a fight against racism in America.

This is my first blog post for the Pol 55 class. Even though we had to start the week before I couldn’t come up with the idea of how to start the blog. Moving to online classes has been really hard for me. However, this can be a really good time to focus on your self and do the things you didn’t have time for. For example, I’ve been learning how to play my guitar which I got for my birthday last year but didn’t have time to play it.

The American government concept I memed about is checks and Balances. Checks and Balances is an American government system which began in 1788 when the constitution was ratified. This concept was created to control the three branches. The three government branches are Executive, Legislative and Judicial. After the concept of separation of power, the system of checks and balances was created to restrain one branch from gaining too much power.
The Legislative branch is another word for congress. This is where the law is made. The United States Congress consists of the House of Representatives and the Senate. As explained in the textbook American government 2e by Glen Kurtz “Congress is also able to limit the president’s power as commander-in-chief of the armed forces… The president must also seek the advice and consent of the Senate before appointing members of the Supreme Court and ambassadors…”(63). Congress can also pass over the presidents’ veto, and impeach presidents. Congress can also impeach a member of the Judiciary branch.
The Executive branch consists of the president, vice president, and the federal judiciary. This governmental branch enforces the laws. President has the power over the Judicial branch by appointing supreme courts and other federal judges. The president can send legislation back to congress and veto laws made by congress. The Judicial branch consists of Judges and courts. This branch interprets the laws. The members of the Judicial branch can judge legislative acts to be constitutional. The courts can also judge Executive acts to be unconstitutional too.
This meme highlights a small part of the Checks and Balances system. The two arms represent the Legislative and the Judiciary branch while the Executive branch is the joining hands. This is basically trying to show the Executive power is nothing without the other two branches.
I think I should get something between 16 to 20 points because I created an original meme. I did have a citation from the reading, however, I might have some grammatical errors.
